Happy in Our Houses

Today we celebrated the holidays approaching with a House lunch. The children loved meeting up with others from their House.

What a fantastic Art Exhibition we had on the 12-13 September in the school hall. The hall transformed into a beautiful magical space filled with so much creativity - it was a joy! As one student said, "I can't believe this is my school hall!" summed up the feeling we all had.
In Room 15, we went crazy on our characters made from recycled materials. What a lot of hot glue, paint, and recycled bits and pieces were used! The students named their characters who took on a life of their own during ART from the HeART.

Kids in Town 2017

The busy Arts term has kicked off well with a super "Kids in Town" event held today at the Art Gallery. Hoon Hay School was the only school performing and the children gave it their all to an appreciative audience of parents, grandparents, and visitors to the Art Gallery.
Half of Room 15 took part by performing in the Kapa Haka and choir items. They put their heart and soul into it today. Well done children and special thanks to the parents and grandparents who came out to support us.

Matatihi - Maia's Journey of Bravery

Our tamariki enjoyed the performance today from our friends at the Court Theatre with this year's show, Matatihi - Maia's Journey of Bravery.
The wonderful thing about this performance was that it incorporated all four disciplines within the Arts - Dance, Drama, Visual Art, and Music.
It's not an easy task to keep over 400 students engaged and focused for 40mins but Kim, Albany and Jane did it beautifully, and we loved it!

This performance was based on a lot of different stories from people in our local area who have been brave and who have a story to tell.

Hawaii at Hoon Hay!

The sun came out yesterday at our full school assembly. Room 15 and their buddy class presented a light and bright item "How far I'll Go" and the school joined them in singing "Warm Pacific Greetings". Olie and Natalie did a great job of leading the assembly. Thanks to all the parents for coming along to support us!

He Waka Eke Noa

William Dunning’s Colonisation Triptych (1999) represents a re-examination of history, and together these works of art represent a legacy that continues to resonate.

We all enjoyed our trip to the Canterbury Museum and the Christchurch Art Gallery for a look at the He Waka Eke Noa exhibition and to create our own waka design. We loved playing in the Gardens and sitting in the cockpit of the Air NZ plane which is sitting outside the museum!
